Day 2 – Devon: Satan’s County

A late breakfast and a blustery start to the day led us out of Tintagel and up to meet the A39 again. For the early miles, we largely avoided rain, but the amount of surface water on the roads suggested we’d narrowly missed some heavy showers.

We entered Devon not far into the ride, and so began the hills. The inclines are steep and frequent, testing us significantly more than the shallower hills of Cornwall. We managed to shelter from a couple of downpours before heading through Hatherleigh. Unfortunately, my overshoes had taken more water than they could handle by this point, leaving my feet swimming in water.

Shortly after Hatherleigh I picked up a puncture in the front tyre. While I replaced the inner tube, Mike was accompanied by a friendly ginger cat. However, I reckon the cat only had eyes for the bike, not the Mike!

The final 10 miles or so from Crediton were the most unpleasant of the day. In the pouring rain, we headed up a long hill towards Tiverton. The following descent was tough, given the steepness and lack of visibility from the rain. Thankfully, the final few miles were flat into Tiverton.

Still, despite today not being much fun, we’re still feeling fine and ready to get back onto the road in the morning.
